A streetcar passes what would become a major downtown intersection. The building to the left is the old Post Office building on Broad Street, and the one on the right is Plaut's Beehive store, which would later become Kresge's. Between them the old canal stretches westward. After the canal was drained, this part of it became a service road named North Canal Street. The photo below shows the scope of the project as the bed was leveled, the subway tracks built, and the whole thing covered over. At the end of the day it was renamed Raymond Boulevard. |
